Pierluisi Optimistic About Puerto Rico’s Coffee Industry

Ponce, Puerto Rico- Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi today attended the opening of Puerto Rico Coffee Roasters, LLC’s new facilities to mill, roast and distribute coffee.

The new facilities are part of the Company’s larger plan to revitalize the coffee industry in Puerto Rico and to increase manufacturing capacity of its products for export.

“Puerto Rico’s coffee industry is the source of great pride for Island residents. I am pleased tosee that Puerto Rico Coffee Roasters, despite the challenging economic times, has transformed an old facility into a modern facility that has the capacity to process 30 million pounds of coffee per year and that will create more than 150 direct jobs,” said the Resident Commissioner.

Puerto Rico Coffee Roasters helps sustain more than 10,000 coffee growers and harvesters that work in the coffee industry in the central, mountainous region of Puerto Rico. The company has invested more than $70 million since it began operations in 2008.

The Resident Commissioner expressed optimism that this new stage in Puerto Rico Coffee Roasters’ development will strengthen Puerto Rico’s coffee industry and will demonstrate to consumers around the world the high quality of coffee that is produced on the Island.
